The idea that sound itself could travel along a wire captured the imagination of several inventors, and the race to achieve it became one of the most contested episodes in the history of technology.

The person most commonly credited with the invention is Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born teacher of the deaf who emigrated to North America. Bell's professional interest in the mechanics of speech led him to experiment with devices that could convert sound vibrations into electrical signals.
