The smartphone has become one of the most common objects in modern life. In 2023, researchers estimated that more than six billion people, or roughly three quarters of the world's population, owned one. For many users, the first thing they reach for in the morning is not a toothbrush or a kettle but a small glass screen. In many cities, people use their phones to pay for bus rides, order lunch, and unlock their front doors. This habit shows how deeply these devices have entered daily routines, often replacing tools such as watches, cameras, maps, and even wallets.
The first smartphone that combined a telephone with internet access appeared in the early 1990s, but it was heavy and very expensive. Early mobile phones could only make calls and send short texts, so few people imagined they would one day replace personal computers. Everything changed in 2007, when touchscreens became popular and allowed people to type, play games, and browse websites on one device. Within a decade, prices fell sharply. A basic smartphone today costs less than a family meal in some countries, which explains why the technology has spread to almost every corner of the globe.
Smartphones have transformed communication most of all. Text messages, voice notes, and video calls allow friends and families separated by oceans to talk every day at almost no cost. A grandmother in Vietnam can watch her grandson open birthday presents in Canada in real time. Business has changed too: many workers now answer emails on the train, and small shop owners can receive orders through messaging apps without paying for a website. During emergencies, smartphones also save lives, because witnesses can call for help and share their exact location within seconds.
Another major change concerns how people find information. Before smartphones, a person who wanted to know a train time or the capital of a distant country had to visit a library or buy a newspaper. Today, the same answer arrives in seconds. Navigation apps guide drivers around traffic jams, while translation tools help tourists read menus in foreign languages. Teachers notice that students no longer memorise facts as they once did, because facts are always available. Some experts worry that this weakens memory, while others argue it frees the brain for more creative thinking.
The devices have also created new industries. App developers, phone repair shops, and companies selling protective cases have appeared in every city. Some analysts estimate that the app economy alone employs more than ten million people worldwide. Mobile payment systems allow farmers in rural areas to receive money without travelling to a bank. In Kenya, for example, a payment service that works on simple phones has helped millions of people save small amounts of money for the first time in their lives.
However, smartphones bring problems as well. Doctors report that many teenagers sleep badly because they check their screens late at night. The blue light from displays can delay the body's natural sleep clock by more than an hour. In addition, some users feel anxious when they cannot see their phone, a feeling researchers call nomophobia. Surveys suggest that the average person touches their phone more than two thousand times a day, which raises questions about concentration and mental health. Parents often argue with children about how much screen time is healthy, and family dinners can fall silent when everyone stares at a different device.
Governments and schools have begun to react. Several countries now limit phone use during lessons, arguing that students learn better without distractions. A few schools have gone further, banning phones entirely and reporting that playground conversation has returned. Some restaurants offer discounts to customers who leave their phones in a box at the table. Technology companies themselves have added screen time reports to their products, perhaps admitting that the tools they designed can be difficult to put down.
Looking ahead, smartphones will probably become even more central to daily life. New models already translate languages instantly and measure the user's heartbeat. The real challenge for society is not the device itself but how people choose to use it. As one researcher put it, a smartphone is like a knife: it can prepare a meal or cause an injury, depending on the hand that holds it. Whatever happens next, the small device in our pockets will remain one of the defining inventions of the early twenty-first century.
