Look closely at an ordinary day and much of it turns out to be anything but decided. Researchers at Duke University estimated that around 40 percent of the actions people perform each day are not the result of conscious decisions but of habits, repeated behaviours triggered almost automatically by the situation. We brush our teeth, take the same route to work and check our phones in the lift without ever really choosing to do so. Understanding how these routines form, and how they can be reshaped, has become a major focus of behavioural science.

The basic architecture of a habit is often described as the habit loop, a three-part cycle identified in neurological research and popularised by the journalist Charles Duhigg. First comes a cue, a trigger that tells the brain to switch into automatic mode: a time of day, a place, an emotion or the presence of particular people. Next comes the routine, the behaviour itself, which may be physical, mental or emotional. Finally comes the reward, something the brain values that helps it decide whether the loop is worth remembering and repeating.

Inside the brain, habit formation involves a gradual shift in where behaviour is controlled. When an action is new, it requires the effortful attention of the prefrontal cortex. With repetition, control migrates to the basal ganglia, a cluster of structures deep in the brain that stores patterns of behaviour. Brain scans show that as a habit strengthens, activity becomes concentrated at the beginning and end of the routine, as if the brain were packaging the whole sequence into a single automatic unit. This efficiency is precisely why habits free the mind for other tasks, and why they are so hard to interrupt once established.

How long does this process take? A popular claim says twenty-one days, but the best evidence paints a more complicated picture. In a 2010 study, the health psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues at University College London tracked volunteers as they adopted a new daily behaviour, such as eating a piece of fruit with lunch or running before dinner. On average, participants needed 66 days before the behaviour felt fully automatic, and the range was enormous, from 18 days for some to 254 days for others. Missing a single day, encouragingly, did not measurably derail the process.

Once formed, habits are remarkably durable because the cue alone can launch the routine. A smoker who always lights up with morning coffee may find that the smell of coffee is enough to produce a craving, regardless of any decision made the night before. This is why willpower, understood as a moment-to-moment battle of decisions, tends to lose against context. The environment whispers its instructions constantly, while resolve must be summoned afresh each time.

The same mechanics, however, can be turned to our advantage. Because habits follow cues, designing the environment is often more effective than exhorting the self. People who wish to exercise can lay out their running shoes where they will be seen first thing in the morning; those who wish to eat better can place fruit at eye level and hide the biscuits. Starting absurdly small, with two minutes of stretching rather than a full workout, lowers the barrier until the loop can take over, and attaching a new behaviour to an existing routine gives it a ready-made cue.

Breaking an unwanted habit follows a parallel logic. Because a well-worn loop rarely disappears entirely, the most reliable approach is to keep the cue and the reward but substitute a different routine, a principle Duhigg calls the golden rule of habit change. Someone who snacks when bored at work might instead take a short walk, if the walk provides the same relief from monotony. Identifying the true reward often requires experimentation, since the obvious one is not always the real driver of the behaviour.

Not all habits are equal in their effects. Researchers speak of keystone habits, behaviours such as regular exercise or family meals that seem to reorganise other patterns in a person's life, improving sleep, spending or productivity almost as a side effect. The broader lesson of the science is optimistic: behaviour is less a matter of iron character than of quiet engineering, and whoever redesigns the loop redesigns the life it produces.
