Reading passage
Riverside Park is a large green space next to the river in the middle of the town. It is open every day from six in the morning until nine at night. Many people come here to walk, run, or just sit and relax. The park is free for everyone, and it is one of the most popular places in town.
The park has something for everyone. There is a children's playground with swings and slides. There are two football fields and a small basketball court. Near the river, there is a long path for walking and cycling. Old trees give shade in the summer, and there are many benches where people can sit and rest after a walk.
Every morning, Mr Chen walks his dog in the park. His dog is called Lucky, and it loves to run on the grass. Mr Chen has walked in the park every day for ten years. He knows all the other dog walkers, and they often stop to talk for a few minutes. For Mr Chen, the park is like a second home.
In the early morning, the park is quiet. Only a few runners and dog walkers are there. The birds sing in the trees, and the river moves slowly. Later in the morning, more people arrive. Parents bring their children to the playground. Older people come to exercise together in groups on the grass near the main gate.
There is a small cafe in the park near the main gate. It sells coffee, tea, cakes, and ice cream. The cafe is busiest at the weekend. Families sit at the tables outside when the weather is good. In winter, people take their drinks away and walk around the park to stay warm in the cold air.
The park is also a place for events. Every summer, there is a music festival in the park. Thousands of people come to listen to bands from the town and other cities. There is also a fun run every spring. The money from the fun run helps to keep the park clean and beautiful for everyone who visits it.
A team of workers looks after the park. They cut the grass, plant flowers, and pick up litter. The flowers in the park change with the seasons. In spring there are tulips, and in summer there are roses. Many people say the park looks its best in May, when everything is green and full of colour.
The river is an important part of the park. Ducks and swans live on the water, and children love to watch them. People can also take boat trips from the small bridge. Fishing is not allowed in the park, but many people stand on the bridge and look down at the fish in the water below them.
Emily, a student, comes to the park to study when the weather is warm. She sits under a big tree with her books. She says she can think better outside than in her room at home. Her friends often join her after class. Sometimes they do not study at all, but they always enjoy their time in the park together.
Last year, the town made some changes to the park. The old playground was replaced with new equipment. New lights were put along the paths, so the park is safer at night. There are also new signs that tell visitors about the trees and birds in the park. Most people think the changes are very good.
Not everyone is happy with the park, however. Some people say the car park is too small. On busy days, drivers cannot find a place for their cars. Others want more toilets near the playground. The town says it will think about these problems next year. For now, most visitors agree that the park is a lovely place to spend time.
For the people of the town, Riverside Park is more than just a park. It is a place to meet friends, to play, to exercise, and to rest. On sunny Sundays, the grass is full of families with picnic baskets. The park shows how important green spaces are for life in a busy town like this one.
