The camera has changed more than the way people record events; it has changed the way they understand reality itself. Before photography, visual records of the world depended on the skill of painters, whose work was slow, expensive and open to interpretation. The invention of a machine that could fix an image automatically was therefore not merely a technical achievement but a cultural turning point, one that altered art, journalism, science and family life within a single century.
The principle behind the camera is ancient. Scholars in China and the Arab world described the camera obscura, a darkened chamber in which light passing through a small hole projects an inverted image of the outside scene, more than a thousand years ago. For centuries, however, these images were fleeting; they could be viewed or traced by hand but not preserved. The missing element was a material that would react permanently to light.
That breakthrough came in the 1820s, when the French inventor Joseph Nicephore Niepce produced the earliest surviving photograph, a view from his window that required an exposure of many hours. His partner Louis Daguerre refined the process, and in 1839 the daguerreotype was announced to the public in Paris. Each daguerreotype was a unique image on a polished silver plate, astonishingly detailed but impossible to copy. Portraits that had once been the privilege of the wealthy suddenly became available to ordinary families, and studios opened in cities across Europe and America.
Meanwhile, in England, William Henry Fox Talbot developed a rival method based on paper negatives. Although Talbot's images were softer in detail, the negative process possessed one decisive advantage: a single negative could produce many positive prints. This principle of reproduction became the foundation of nearly all later photography. By the 1850s, photographers were travelling with portable darkrooms to document wars, expeditions and city streets, bringing distant realities into the public imagination for the first time.
The greatest obstacle facing early photography was convenience. Plates had to be coated, exposed and developed while still wet, which demanded considerable expertise. A series of innovations removed these barriers. Dry gelatine plates, introduced in the 1870s, could be prepared in factories and stored before use. Then, in 1888, George Eastman launched the Kodak camera, sold with the slogan suggesting that customers press the button and the company do the rest. Users returned the entire camera to the factory, where the film was developed and the camera reloaded. Photography had become a hobby rather than a profession.
The twentieth century turned the camera into a precision instrument. The German Leica, introduced in 1925, popularised the small 35 millimetre film format and enabled a new style of candid street photography. Single lens reflex cameras allowed photographers to see exactly the image that the lens would capture, while colour film, available commercially from the 1930s, gradually moved from novelty to standard. Instant cameras, pioneered by Edwin Land's Polaroid company in 1948, delivered finished prints within a minute, seemingly defeating chemistry itself.
Digital technology brought the most radical change of all. The first electronic still cameras appeared in laboratories in the 1970s, but digital photography only reached consumers in the 1990s. Its advantages proved overwhelming: images could be reviewed instantly, stored by the thousand and transmitted across the world in seconds. When manufacturers began combining cameras with mobile phones in the early 2000s, dedicated camera sales eventually entered a steep decline. Today, it is estimated that over a trillion photographs are taken each year, the vast majority with phones rather than cameras.
Critics have long debated what this abundance means. Some argue that photography has democratised memory, allowing anyone to document injustice or preserve family history. Others warn that the ease of digital manipulation has weakened the photograph's traditional authority as evidence. What seems certain is that the camera, from Niepce's hours-long exposure to the effortless snapshot of today, has continually redefined the boundary between seeing and believing.
