Few sporting events carry the symbolic weight of the marathon. The standard race covers 42.195 kilometres, a distance that has become a global benchmark for human endurance. The largest city races, including those in New York, London and Berlin, now attract more than 45,000 finishers each, while millions more watch on television. Entry demand is so intense that places in the London Marathon are routinely allocated by lottery, with fewer than one in five applicants securing a bib.
The modern distance was fixed rather by accident than by design. At the 1908 London Olympics, organisers plotted a course from Windsor Castle to the stadium at White City so that the royal family could watch the start, and the resulting 42.195 kilometres was formally adopted as the official length in 1921. The name itself honours the legend of a Greek messenger said to have run from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, although historians doubt the story. The early Olympic marathons were shorter and varied from Games to Games, generally covering around forty kilometres depending on the local course. After the 1908 race fixed the distance, organisers of other marathons gradually adopted it, and by the 1920s the measurement of courses had become a serious technical task involving calibrated bicycle wheels.
Physiologically, the marathon tests three qualities: maximal oxygen uptake, the lactate threshold, and running economy, meaning the energy cost of covering ground at a given pace. Elite runners combine all three at exceptional levels. Because the body stores only enough carbohydrate for roughly ninety minutes of hard effort, most competitors experience glycogen depletion after about thirty kilometres, a crisis popularly known as hitting the wall, when pace collapses and even walking becomes difficult. Temperature plays a decisive role as well: most world records have been set in cool conditions between seven and twelve degrees Celsius, because the body diverts blood to the skin for cooling when it is hot, leaving less oxygen for the working muscles. Elite races therefore start early in the morning, and some offer ice and sponges along the route.
Training methods have been refined by decades of sports science. Most programmes follow the principle of periodisation, building weekly mileage gradually before a taper of two to three weeks during which training volume drops sharply so that muscles repair and carbohydrate stores recover. Studies of recreational runners show that consistent weekly mileage matters more for finishing times than any single long run, and that runners who complete at least one run longer than thirty kilometres are significantly more likely to achieve their target.
Technology has recently reshaped the limits of the event. Racing shoes with curved carbon-fibre plates and resilient foam improve running economy by around four per cent, enough to shift world records. In 2019 the Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge covered the distance in one hour, fifty-nine minutes and forty seconds in Vienna, although the performance did not count as a record because rotating pacemakers and personal drink deliveries violated competition rules. The attempt still demonstrated how engineering, nutrition and teamwork now frame what once seemed a purely individual achievement.
The marathon has also changed socially. Women were excluded from official races for decades, and not until 1972 did the Boston Marathon admit them formally; by 2019 women accounted for nearly half of all finishers in major American races. Average finishing times have become slower as fields have widened, which researchers interpret not as declining fitness but as evidence that the event now welcomes people who once considered running impossible. Charity fundraising adds another motive, with London runners alone raising over sixty million pounds annually. The wheelchair marathon has grown in parallel, and its athletes now compete for substantial prize money in the major races. Many cities also stage shorter companion events on the same weekend, so that families and beginners can share the atmosphere without committing to the full distance.
Medical opinion remains broadly favourable. Although sudden cardiac deaths during races attract headlines, large studies place the risk at roughly one death per 200,000 participants, far lower than the long-term cardiovascular gains associated with endurance training. Public health researchers therefore describe the mass-participation marathon as a rare alignment of spectacle and prevention, in which a festival atmosphere quietly recruits thousands of people into sustained physical activity.
