Reading passage
Every act of independent study begins with a decision: what to review, for how long, and in what way. These choices are guided by metacognition, the capacity to monitor and control one's own thinking. Psychologists have become increasingly interested in how learners make such decisions, because a growing body of evidence shows that untutored intuitions about learning are frequently wrong. Students routinely choose strategies that feel productive but produce weak long-term retention, while avoiding strategies that feel difficult but work far better.
Surveys of study behaviour confirm this mismatch. When the researchers Nate Kornell and Robert Bjork asked university students how they prepared for examinations, the large majority reported that they reread their notes and textbooks, often several times, and that they highlighted key passages. Very few reported testing themselves or spreading their study across multiple sessions, even though these students were, by their own account, keen to obtain the highest possible grades. Rereading, in other words, is the most popular strategy and, as it turns out, one of the least effective.
At the heart of these choices lies a mental estimate known as a judgment of learning: the learner's private prediction of how well material has been mastered and whether it will be recalled later. These judgments steer everything that follows, because students quite reasonably stop studying whatever they believe they already know and devote further effort to whatever still feels unlearned. If the judgment is accurate, study time is allocated efficiently. If it is systematically biased, effort is wasted on the familiar while the genuinely difficult goes untouched.
The principal source of bias is fluency. When a text is reread, the words are processed more smoothly on each encounter, and this ease of processing is misread as evidence of understanding. Familiarity with the material on the page, however, is not the same as the ability to produce that material from memory, which is what examinations actually demand. Highlighting compounds the problem by creating islands of vivid, familiar sentences that feel learned because they are effortlessly recognised.
The most robust demonstration of a superior alternative is the testing effect. In a landmark series of experiments, Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger asked students to study short prose passages, then either restudy them repeatedly or practise retrieving the content from memory with the book closed. When the final test came five minutes later, the restudiers performed slightly better. But when the test was delayed by a week, the pattern reversed dramatically: students who had practised retrieval recalled roughly 80 percent of the material, while those who had merely restudied recalled barely a third. Retrieval practice, the act of pulling information out of memory, strengthens that memory far more than putting information in again.
Related findings come from work on spacing and interleaving. Distributing study across days, rather than massing it into a single session, produces substantially better long-term retention, as does mixing different topics or problem types within a session rather than practising one type to exhaustion. Robert Bjork has coined the term desirable difficulties for such conditions: they slow performance during study, making learning feel harder and less successful, yet they yield stronger and more durable memories precisely because they force the mind to work.
Why, then, do learners persist with inferior methods? Part of the answer is that effort is aversive; retrieval practice feels like failure because answers come slowly and sometimes not at all, whereas rereading delivers a comforting sense of progress. Part is measurement error: students typically assess their learning immediately after studying, when the material is still warm in memory, and short-term accessibility masquerades as durable knowledge. The very strategies that inflate immediate confidence are those that deflate later performance.
The practical implications are straightforward, if not painless. Learners should close the book and test themselves, space their sessions, and treat the discomfort of effortful recall as a sign that learning is happening rather than failing. Institutions, for their part, might teach study skills as deliberately as they teach content, since left to intuition, most students will choose the easy road that leads to forgetting.
