Honeybees are among the most intensively studied insects on Earth, and much of that attention has focused on their remarkable system of communication. Unlike most animals, a honeybee can tell its nestmates precisely where to find food, even when the source lies several kilometres away. The scientist who decoded this ability was the Austrian zoologist Karl von Frisch, whose patient observations in the 1940s revealed that returning foragers perform a ritualised movement now known as the waggle dance. For this discovery, which overturned the assumption that insect behaviour is purely instinctive and simple, von Frisch was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973.

The waggle dance is performed on the vertical surface of the honeycomb inside the dark hive. Recruits that had watched a dance flew out in the direction and at the distance the dance had indicated, then searched for food near the predicted location. Although many bees never found the exact site and relied on flower scents for the final approach, the experiment confirmed that the dance genuinely transmits spatial information.

Later studies have shown that the dance is surprisingly imprecise. Individual waggle runs by the same bee can vary by tens of degrees, and recruits appear to average several runs before setting off. Rather than being a flaw, this scatter may be functional: recruits spread out around the indicated location, which is useful when food is patchy.
