1A volcano is a mountain with a hole at the top.

2Deep under the ground, rock is so hot that it melts.

3This melted rock is called magma, and it rises slowly upwards.

4Pressure slowly builds up inside the mountain for many long years.

5Finally, the volcano erupts and sends hot rock into the air.

6Thick grey ash falls like snow over towns and farms nearby.

7Rivers of red lava flow slowly down the sides of the mountain.

8Lava destroys everything in its path, but it moves quite slowly.

9After the eruption, the lava cools down and becomes hard black rock.

10This new rock makes the soil very rich for growing crops.

11That is why farmers still live near dangerous volcanoes today.
